Symondsbury Manor

Symondsbury Manor is a fine grade II listed Tudor Manor House. It is set in its own walled grounds of about two acres, with large lawns, rockeries and flower gardens to the south and west which are very suited to croquet and knockabout games. To the north of the Manor is an orchard and wildflower garden and beyond are the picturesque rolling hills of Dorset. This large country Manor House is situated in the very pretty village of Symondsbury with its parish church, village school and thatched pub and cottages.

The entire area is designated as being of outstanding natural beauty and is ideal for long walks or a relaxed seaside holiday. It is about a mile and a half to the sea and there are a variety of beaches to choose from ranging from sandy beaches at West Bay and Lyme Regis to small coves at Eype and Chideok. This is the scenery that appeared in the “Harbour Lights” television series and in various films in which Symondsbury Manor featured as a location.

Bridport, the nearest town, is a mile and a half away and has large street markets twice a week – Wednesday and Saturday- of fruit and vegetables, antiques and bric-a-brac. There are golf links, horse riding, sailing and diving facilities within easy reach. There is a wide and growing choice of restaurants offering English and Ethnic cuisines ( see our catering page below) and many good pubs including the Ilchester Arms in Symondsbury only one hundred yards from the Manor.

Being a large Manor House, the spacious accommodation comprises eight double bedded rooms, some of which have antique four-posters, some super kings size beds and some antique standard doubles. There are also three twin-bedded rooms and one single boatbed. Two of the large double bedded rooms also have an extra single bed if needed. There are five bathrooms each with wc. The living room is particularly large; sixty feet long; with a dining table that extends to seat twenty-three. At the other end of the room there are plenty of comfy sofas and armchairs and a woodburning stove, pool table and television, video and DVD player. There is also a south facing sun lounge which overlooks the garden and church.. The large kitchen has a four-oven AGA and a large range style gas cooker; two large fridge-freezers; dishwasher, washing machine, kitchen equipment, cutlery and crockery for twenty three guests.

Symondsbury Manor is a comfortable building. It was previously either a farmhouse or a monastry before being enlarged in 1620 into the present building. The accommodation sleeps a total of twenty-three adults but can be booked for just 14 and above in low season and 16 or 18 at other times (18 in high season - please see Terms and Conditions). Children are of course very welcome. There are also a number of good local Hotels and Bed and Breakfast facilities nearby and in the village if you want to have a larger party than can sleep at the Manor.

The house contains a large number of paintings both contemporary and traditional which have been collected by the owner, who is himself a painter, over a period of time. The interior is colourful and comfortable and lends itself well to weekend house parties. Thomas Hardy came to tea here in 1883 and Symondsbury Manor has hosted a number of well known figures in the Arts in recent years.

Catering for house parties can be arranged if required. The area is now well known for the River Cottage television series and there are consequently several exceptionally good local catering organisations (see Catering). We are happy to supply the names of local suppliers of logs for the open fires, flower arrangers, and the local sources of wines and beers. There are three supermarkets in Bridport and a number of local bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers and a thriving farmer’s market.
